New Ultrasound Scan Can Detect Early Signs of Heart Disease in 15 minutes!

At SageMED we are always investing in new technology to improve your care. Today, we are pleased to announce the imminent arrival of our new GE Logiq-E Ultrasound machine. This high resolution ultrasound device is capable of rendering high resolution scans of your arteries, predicting heart disease with 90% accuracy! The test is quick, simple, and affordable ($195), and has ZERO risk since ultrasound does not emit any harmful radiation.

The technology uses data from studies that examine a specific and easy to access artery in your neck, the carotid artery. These studies have shown that if you have disease in your carotids then there is an approximately 90% chance that the same process is happening in your heart. The higher the resolution of the scan, the more accurately we can predict the presence of heart disease. Our Logiq-E series is one of the highest resolution ultrasound devices on the market–equal to or even superior to what most hospital-based clinics use.

Here is an example of an image; the arrows show the presence of early onset plaques and thickening walls within the arteries:

How does this differ from blood tests?

Monitoring cholesterol, blood sugar, and inflammation can help doctor predict if you may have heart disease, but the accuracy if these tests are constantly being challenged. We have obsessed about cholesterol for decades and it has done little to curb the rate of heart disease in the US. Cholesterol is a bit more useful if it is also tested with blood sugar and inflammation markers, but still these are educated guess that put you in a risk

category: low, intermediate, or high risk. Imaging, on the other hand, does not put you in a category, it finds heart disease, measure it, and gives us an objective measure to monitor during treatment. This type of testing is useful because a patient could have totally normal cholesterol values with developing disease; on the other hand, a patient could also have high cholesterol with no evidence of vascular disease. This imaging will help us know with more certainty how to create an optimal plan to give your heart the best chance for a long and healthy life.

Who should get it?

Any one over the age of 40 should get screened for disease, as early prevention is key to success. If you have a family history of heart disease or overweight (BMI greater than 25) then you should get screened immediately, regardless of age.
