So we’ve rounded up the best nutrition, exercise, and mental health apps to use in 2023 just for you.

Nutrition Apps

  1. Ate Food Journal - Focused on mindful eating, Ate Food Journal helps users cultivate awareness around what, when, and why they are eating. This is very cool, as it blends eating and mindfulness to help users become aware of and shift their eating habits to ones that help them feel better. This app is an especially great option for folks with a history of disordered eating, as it doesn’t involve any calorie counting. Ate Food Journal costs $9.99/mo, and is available for both Android and iPhone users.

  2. MyPlate - Run by livestrong.com, MyPlate is an aesthetically pleasing and well-designed calorie and macro counting app. It includes a food database of over 2 million items, and allows you to scan the barcode of any purchased food to make tracking a breeze. It’s available on both iPhone and Android for $9.99/mo or $44.99/year. As a bonus for Apple fans, it can also sync with your Apple Watch.

  3. My Fitness Pal - An oldie but a goodie, My Fitness Pal seamlessly blends tracking nutrition and macro goals with exercise to help you reach your fitness goals. Dr. Sage often recommends My Fitness Pal to his patients, as the nutrition tracking can be helpful for not only managing weight loss, but also increasing nutritional education, helping you to make informed food choices. My Fitness Pal is available for free on both iPhone and Android, or you can upgrade to the premium version for $9.99/mo.

  4. PlateJoy - Self-described as an app to help busy people eat more healthily, PlateJoy creates customized recipes and meal plans for you, and takes it a step further by generating a grocery list of everything you need to eat healthy and save you time. PlateJoy is $12.99/mo or $99 for a year, and is available on both iPhone and Android.

There are programs designed for both at-home and in-gym workouts, making it easily adaptable to your lifestyle. Fit Body is $19.99/mo, and can be downloaded on both Apple and Android devices.

Youtube - Youtube is, of course, a media streaming app, not strictly an exercise app. However in my opinion, it remains one of the most accessible options for exercise routines and classes for folks on a tight budget. From yoga and barre to kettlebell routines, Youtube has it all. My personal favorite instructors are Tory Vera of Bodyvera Fitness for Pilates, and Reyna Cohan of BodyKind Yoga for all of my mindful movement needs.
