Life is busy and often crazy, but it’s important to remember that you can’t take care of others (be it people, work projects, or home management) unless you take care of yourself first. I like to remember this using a watering can analogy - if you’re a watering can, your job is to provide water to all of the plants you care for. But in order to do this, you have to make sure you keep your water topped off, or there won’t be enough water for you to share with the plants that need your help. As someone with a strong drive to help others, it took me a long time to learn the importance of taking care of myself first.

Self-care encapsulates all different aspects of wellness, including mental, physical, and spiritual health. Accordingly, activities and practices for self-care vary depending on which aspect of wellness you want to focus on.

Here are 5 Easy Self-Care Ideas!

  1. Journaling - five to ten minutes of journaling per day can be an excellent way to acknowledge your feelings, and provides you with a dedicated outlet to help you clear your mind.

  2. Doing an activity with intention - whether it be making coffee mindfully, coloring in an adult coloring book, or another activity you do daily, practicing this activity with mindfulness and allowing yourself to be fully present in the moment is an excellent way to practice self care.

  3. Treat yourself! Get a massage, go for a hike, buy tickets to see your favorite musician in concert. Do something nice for yourself, that allows you a dedicated amount of time to do something you love.

  4. Meal Prep - this really speaks to the physical aspect of self-care. What you eat impacts your physical and mental health. Plus, prepping healthy meals on your day off can help you avoid last minute dinner stress during the rushed workweek. You can check out some of our favorite meal prep ideas here

  5. Schedule time to check in with yourself, even if it’s only for a few minutes. While it may seem insignificant, having a dedicated amount of time to be with your thoughts and feelings can help you to relieve stress and decrease emotional fatigue.
