For people who have suffered through a motor vehicle accident, massage therapy can be a great addition to your treatment plan at SageMED. One particular injury that has seen a lot of relief from massage therapy is whiplash.
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is when the head and spine move rapidly in one direction, which signals the muscles to contract, and they suddenly move in the opposite direction due to the momentum of the impact. This motion can cause a variety of injuries to the body, including strains in the muscles and tendons of the back and neck, spinal sprains, disk herniation, and dislocated or broken vertebrae.
Though whiplash is most commonly known to be a result of a vehicle crash, any sudden whip-like movement in the head and spine can cause whiplash.
Symptoms of Whiplash
The appearance of whiplash symptoms can be somewhat sneaky. This injury can occur from a crash (or any kind of impact) from any direction - front, side, and back - at speeds of as little as 5 miles per hour. It can also take around 2-48 hours for the symptoms to show up.
It’s important to listen to your body and watch out for the following signs and symptoms of whiplash if you have experienced this kind of event.
Neck pain or stiffness
Lower back pain
Pain in shoulders or between shoulder blades
Decreased range of motion
Neurological symptoms such as
Ringing in the ears
Dizziness or vertigo
Massage Can Help
If you have experienced a combination of these symptoms or have seen a physician who has diagnosed you with whiplash, massage therapy is one of the best treatments for getting your muscles back into their optimal state.
Massage helps to decrease pain and inflammation in your neck and back. It also manipulates the muscles in a way that breaks up and realigns scar tissue, reduces muscle tension, and restores your range of motion. In one visit with Sarah, you may feel an immediate sense of relief.
If you, or anyone you know, have been in a motor vehicle accident, see one of our providers for diagnosis, and schedule a massage with Sarah Baxter, LMP. You won’t regret it!
