Here in the Pacific Northwest we don’t get hot weather all that often, but when we do it’s problematic, as many people don’t have air conditioning. It’s all about the infrastructure! I have made you all a list of what to look out for in regards to heat exposure and ways to cool down during the hotter times of the year.
Reasons hot weather is an issue:
-It can lead to overheating, heat exhaustion and possibly heat stroke.
What is heat exhaustion: inability of the body to cool off due to the temperature it is experiencing. This is more likely to happen to younger/older people.
If you are noticing that you or someone in your care is showing signs of heat exhaustion please: go to a cooler location, give fluids, rest/stop activity.
One of my favorite Naturopathic go to’s for the heat is a class of herbs known as refrigerants:
Refrigerant herbs (make teas from one or more of these and keep them in the fridge)
If you are outside, go to a place with a cross breeze and shade. Cool water (for drinking and for lounging in) is helpful for cooling down as well. Spay parks can be a great way to spend time outside and be cool at the same time.
Moisten a towel with cool water and use on the base of the neck and wrists, feet. Misting with a water bottle can also help. A water fight or running through the sprinklers are another good way to cool down outside.
Go to an area with air conditioning: libraries, malls, grocery stores, the movies are all good places to find air conditioning
For breastfed babies: it is not recommended to give water, follow your baby's natural inclinations: if they want more milk please give it to them! Make sure the person doing the breastfeeding is well hydrated and also avoiding excess heat exposure.
How do you keep your family cool during hot weather?
