When most of us wake in the morning there is an instant knee-jerk reaction to start a cup of coffee or check our email, social media account, current events, and or care for ones children or pets. I want to propose a completely different way to start the morning. Instead of checking in with the outside world and daily responsibilities when you first awake–––check in with yourself, your inner self, your infinite self. Two incredibly humble and gifted meditation/dharma/mindfulness based wisdom teachers, Joel and Michelle Levey have created a simple yet powerful way to connect to our heart and mind and beauty in the morning. Their practice that I will lay out can provide radical change and transformation for your life by simply spending 1 - 5 minutes connecting with yourself when you first wake instead of our common morning distractions.
As soon as you awake or turn off the alarm begin by:
1. Noticing you are awake, or awakening to become awake, or simply am awake, alive, present, and present to the awesomeness of your being. This is a time to drop into the sensations of the body, mind, and infinite self. Let your presence shine, feel the radiance of life sourcing through this gift of a body we have received.
2. Giving Gratitude. Notice any loved ones, spiritual guides, friends, mentors, heroes, animals, plants, landscapes, constellations, etc. that come to mind and reach out to them with immense humility, thanks, love, kindness, and gratitude. Allow yourself to feel filled with love and gratitude for whomever or whatever comes into your consciousness.
3. Setting an intention for the day. What do you want to achieve this day, or begin to achieve? If you have a project that is stressing you out that has not been completed. If you want to begin learning how to play the guitar. If there is a difficult conversation you are wanting to begin with a loved one. If you want to spend more time with your children. More time meditating. Less time wasting time. The lists go on and on. But the idea is clear–––create intentions for the day that inspire you and require your attention to bring them into manifestation.
I highly recommend giving this this morning practice a earnest chance. Test it out over the next week and see if it provides more richness and beauty in your life. I have found this to be an indispensable way to begin my day. Lastly, I would like to send my heart-felt gratitude to Joel and Michelle for this nurturing practice.
