Healthier Holiday Treats

The holidays are in full swing and there are tons of parties to go to and treats around every corner. If you are trying to eat healthier or are avoiding certain foods one of the best ways to ensure you have something you can eat is to bring one or two special treats to share with your friends and family. A meat and cheese plate, a fruit plate with a yogurt dip or veggie plate with a hummus dip can add much needed variety to a holiday potluck, but if you want to bring something sweet I have some great ideas for you!
The following recipes are fantastic alternatives to the processed sugar/processed flour treats that abound during the holiday season:
If you love Almond Roca check out this great recipe that is made with maple syrup and is grain and corn syrup free.
Caramel: This is one of my favorite recipes for caramel; it’s made with honey instead of sugar. I suggest moderation even with natural sweeteners such as maple syrup and honey, but they are more nutritionally complex than processed sugars.
I am a big fan of regular whipped cream made at home with grass-fed cream and a small amount of maple syrup and vanilla bean extract but if you can’t have dairy try out coconut milk whipped cream that you make at home with the help of an Isi dispenser.
Another delicious holiday drink is eggnog, here is a healthy recipe from one of my dear friends and colleagues, Dr Allegra Hart, ND.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season!
